City of Orange Beach Continuing Excellence Fall 2021 programs 

The City of Orange Beach’s Continuing Excellence program for adults has a full slate of free Fall 2021 programs and activities lined up at the Orange Beach Recreation Center and other facilities, including some virtual options. Registration is open. Class size is limited. 

Registration must be completed online via ActiveNet. Each participant must have an account. Click here to view instructions on how to make an ActiveNet account or scroll to the bottom of the page to see the instructions.

MONDAYS 

Beginner Portuguese

Beginner Portuguese Language will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. each Monday from September 13th to December 6th at the Orange Beach Recreation Center in MPR2 (Multipurpose Room 2). Classes will not be held on holidays or student holidays due to the Expect Excellence childcare program. For Beginner Portuguese, there will be no class on October 11th and November 22nd.

The instructor will be Uilma Meehan.

In this class, students will learn basic conversational Portuguese with an emphasis on situations one might encounter when traveling to a Portuguese speaking country. Taught by a native speaker from Brazil, we will start with basic vocabulary; we will gradually introduce more complex phrases and cultural highlights.

Beginner French

Beginner French Language will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. each Monday, September 13th to December 9th at the Orange Beach Recreation Center in MPR2 (Multipurpose Room 2). Classes will not be held on holidays or student holidays due to the Expect Excellence childcare program. For Beginner French, there will be no class on October 11th and November 22nd.

The instructor will be Erin Jackson.

The Beginner French class will introduce students to the foundations of the French language such as the alphabet, numbers, and common verbs and vocabulary. Once the students have grasped the basics, they will be introduced to common phrases and French grammar. Classes will also include exposure to French media such as music and the engaging opportunity to become pen-pals with native French speakers.

Ballet, Tap & Jazz 

Ballet, Tap & Jazz will be offered as part of the Fall 2021/Spring 2022 Continuing Excellence Program.

The class is free and will be held from 11 a.m. to Noon each Monday, September 13th to May 9th at the Orange Beach Tennis Center. Classes will not be held on holidays or student holidays due to the Expect Excellence childcare program. For Ballet, Tap & Jazz, there will be no class on October 11th, November 22nd, December 20th, January 3rd, January 17th, February 28th, and April 4th.

The instructor will be Rio Cordy. Class size: 3 to 20 participants.

This class is for all levels of dancers. Students will be trained in techniques, combinations, and production numbers in the different styles of dance.

Required supplies: Appropriate clothing - athletic wear / clothes you can easily move in. Jazz and tap shoes (Ballet shoes if desired).

TUESDAYS

Virtual Spanish 

Virtual Spanish will be held via Google Classroom from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. each Tuesday, September 7th to December 7th. Classes will not be held on holidays or student holidays due to the Expect Excellence childcare program. For Virtual Spanish, there will be no class on November 23rd.

The instructor will be Ivan Correa.

This class has been designed for all those who are interested in learning to speak, write, and read the Spanish language. The instructor will also teach about the different cultures united by this wonderful language. There is no better way to learn a language than by "living it". The class is designed to make learning fun and practical.

Prior to the class starting, the instructor will send a Google Classroom link to sign into to participate.

Samba Dance

Samba Dance will be offered as part of the Fall 2021 Continuing Excellence Program at the Orange Beach Recreation Center.

The class is free and will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. each Tuesday, September 7th to December 7th at the Orange Beach Recreation Center in MPR1 (Multipurpose Room 1). Classes will not be held on holidays or student holidays due to the Expect Excellence childcare program. For Samba Dance, there will be no class on November 23rd.

The instructor will be Uilma Meehan.

Samba is a Brazilian musical genre and dance style, with its roots in Africa. In this class, participants will learn all the basics steps of samba that rely on fast steps, hip work, and full body moves including lunges, level changes, and vigorous upper body and arm movement.

Seashell Collections & Creations

Seashell Collections & Creations will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. each Tuesday, September 7th to December 7th at the Orange Beach Golf Center meeting room.

The instructor will be Vicki Brown.

Join us for seashell collecting and craft projects to transform beach souvenirs into beautiful ornaments and accessories.

WEDNESDAYS

Virtual French

Classes will not be held on holidays or student holidays due to the Expect Excellence childcare program. For Beginner Spanish, there will be no class on October 7th and November 25th.

The instructor will be Ivan Correa.

SATURDAYS

BioBlitz

BioBlitz will be offered as part of the Fall 2021/Spring 2022 Continuing Excellence Program at the Orange Beach Recreation Center.

The class is free and will be held from 10 a.m. to noon every second Saturday, September to April (except none in November and December). In April, the class will meet on April 30, instead, to participate in the City Nature Challenge.

The class will start with a Virtual iNaturalist workshop followed by onsite excursions. 

The instructor will be Brenda Barr.

Instructor Brenda Barr will help with iNaturalist app usage, then lead the group to capture data at the onsite location.

ActiveNet Orange Beach

In January 2020, the City of Orange Beach started utilizing the ActiveNet website to handle some online registrations and activities sign-ups. 

For your convenience, you can search, enroll and pay registration fees all on ActiveNet from the comfort of your computer or on your Smartphone. To get started an account must be created. 

Once an account is created and children/family members are added, the information will be saved for future activity registrations.  

Creating Your ActiveNet Account

To register for activities, you will need to create an Active Orange Beach account.

Step One:
  1. Start by accessing our new site at https://apm.activecommunities.com/orangebeach
Step Two and Three:
  1. Click “Sign In/Up.” Then on Sign In page, click "Join" below the Sign In button.

Step Four and Five:
  1. Enter your email address. Click "Next."
  2. Fill in your name, date of birth and create a password. Required fields are denoted by a red asterisk (*).
  3. Accept Terms of Use and click “Next.”

Step Six:
  1. Fill in your Personal Information. Under "Phone," use the dropdown and select "Cell Phone." Then select your "Operator" (carrier - AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc.) and add your cell number. Required fields are denoted by a red asterisk (*).
  2. Click "Submit."

Note: Cell phone numbers are required. It is an essential communication tool for the sports director/staff and volunteer coaches.

Step Seven:

Congratulations, you have created your Active Orange Beach account! You will receive an email to activate your account. 
Once the account is activated, you can register for an activity.
